Those first few weeks with your newborn? They go by in a blur. Tiny hands, soft yawns, that new-baby scent, everything changes so fast. A newborn photoshoot is your chance to pause time, even just for a moment, and capture the beauty of those early days.
As a newborn photographer in Zürich, I’ve photographed hundreds of families welcoming their little miracles. Over the years, I’ve learned that a bit of preparation makes all the difference, not just for great photos, but for a calm, enjoyable experience. So here are my best newborn photoshoot tips to help you get ready.

When to Schedule Your Newborn Photography Session in Zürich
Timing is everything. The best window for newborn photography in Zürich is typically between day 7 and day 14 after birth. At this age, babies are still sleepy and flexible, perfect for those dreamy, curled-up poses.
But don’t worry if that time has passed! Beautiful, emotive photos are possible at any stage. After two weeks, sessions simply focus more on connection: eye contact, smiles, little stretches, and family cuddles. Every age has its magic.
If you’re still expecting, it’s best to book your session before your due date. I’ll reserve a flexible spot for you and adjust the date once your baby arrives. That way, you’ll have one less thing to think about during those exciting first days.

What to Wear for a Newborn Photoshoot
Choosing the right outfit doesn’t have to be complicated. Soft, neutral tones always work best: whites, creams, beiges, gentle pastels. These colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs: on your baby.
For parents, simple clothing without busy patterns creates a timeless look. I also have a selection of beautiful long, flowy dresses for moms that photograph wonderfully.
For your little one, I have plenty of adorable outfits in different styles — from minimalistic neutrals to more colorful options if you prefer. Of course, if you’ve prepared something special, it’s great to have your baby already dressed in it when you arrive, as little ones often fall asleep during the car ride.

How to Prepare Your Baby Before the Session
A calm baby means a smooth photoshoot. Try to feed your baby right before the session, a full tummy usually means a sleepy, content newborn.
Bring any essentials you rely on at home: pacifiers, extra diapers, wipes, and a blanket that smells familiar. The little things make a big difference in creating a peaceful environment for your baby.

What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session in Zürich
Every newborn photoshoot is designed to be slow, calm, and baby-led. Nothing is rushed. I always follow your baby’s rhythm, if we need to pause for feeding, cuddling, or soothing, that’s exactly what we do.
The studio is kept warm, soft music plays in the background, and I use gentle, natural light when possible to capture your baby’s features.
Family and Sibling Photoshoot
Even if the main focus is your newborn, including family members adds emotional depth to the session. Parents’ hands cradling their baby or an older sibling’s gentle kiss, these are the photos that families treasure most.
I always start with family and sibling photos first, while everyone still has plenty of energy and smiles to share. It keeps the session fun and relaxed for the kids. Later, if it becomes a bit difficult for them to stay in the studio while we finish the newborn solo portraits, one parent can take them for a short walk or let them play in my studio garden.
For siblings, I also recommend bringing snacks, small toys, or even their favorite songs, keeping things playful helps them relax, and those candid laughs often turn into the most beautiful images.

After the Session: Choosing and Preserving Your Photos
Once the session is complete, I’ll need about two weeks to process your images and prepare the first gallery with basic color correction. From there, you’ll be able to choose your favorite photos for professional retouching.
I always recommend selecting a mix of close-ups, family portraits, and those little details: tiny fingers, soft eyelashes, sweet curls. These images will become part of your family’s story, whether printed in an album, framed on your wall, or cherished as keepsakes for years to come.
